Lenovo Thinkpad

Lenovo is recalling ThinkPad Laptops because the lithium-ion batteries installed in them can overheat and may catch fire. There have been 10 reported incidents worldwide.

This recall affects 3-cell, 4-cell, 6-cell or 9-cell batteries installed in the affected Laptops, or sold separately. Lenovo has said that 37,400 of these were sold in the US and Canada but are unable to say how many were sold in the UK.

Lenovo is supplying replacement batteries to any customer who has one of the affected Laptops. If you have an affected Laptop you should turn off the system, remove the battery, and only power your ThinkPad by plugging in the AC adapter and power cord until you receive a replacement battery.

Lenovo ThinkPad Laptops Affected By This Recall

The Lenovo ThinkPad Laptops affected by this recall are:-

• Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11, 13 and 14 series
• Lenovo ThinkPad T410, T420, T510 and W150 series
• Lenovo ThinkPad X100E, X120E, X200, X201 and X201S series
• They were shipped between October 2010 and April 2011

Identify If Your Battery Is Affected

You have 2 options to identify if your Laptop battery is affected:-

• MANUALLY - You can identify if you have one of the affected batteries by following these instructions:-
  • Recalled battery packs have one of the following part numbers starting with the fourth digit in a long series of numbers and letters printed on a white sticker below the bar code on the battery pack (not very straightforward):-

    

    • 42T4695, 42T4711, 42T4798, 42T4804, 42T4812, 42T4822, 42T4828, 42T4834, 42T4840 and 42T4890
  • If your Laptop battery is affected you can register for the recall at Register For Battery Recall

• AUTOMATED - Lenovo has provided software you can install onto your Laptop that will check the battery for you. You can find more details here Lenovo Battery Recall

What Should You Do If You Have An Affected Lenovo ThinkPad?

If you have one of the affected Lenovo ThinkPad Laptops you should turn off the system, remove the battery, and only power your ThinkPad by plugging in the AC adapter and power cord.
