Sean Smith BSc (Hons), MSc, IAAI - CFI, APAEWE

Sean joined Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue service in 1998, after completing a Bsc (Hons) degree in Building Engineering & Management from Napier University.

After several years serving as an operational firefighter and incident commander, in 2005 Sean helped establish and develop the Fire Investigation Unit in Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service. Sean is currently the longest serving full time Fire Investigation Officer in the Scottish Fire Service.

In 2008 Sean completed an MSc in Fire Investigation from Anglia Ruskin University, where he submitted a thesis entitled ‘Fire Investigation for a Modern Fire Service’, which involved scrutinising the provision of fire investigation within every Fire Service in the UK.   

In his 19 years as a full time Fire Investigation Officer Sean has managed and investigated over 1000 fires involving domestic, commercial and industrial properties, Sean has gained experience in investigating and managing more than 100 fatal fires.

Sean has given evidence as an expert witness in the High Court and Sheriff Court and is actively involved in the training for Crime Scene Managers (Police Scotland), operational firefighters, recruits and newly qualified fire investigation officers. Sean has also presented case studies to the Fire Board and Edinburgh Council and on several occasions to national fire service seminars and conferences.

Sean is a Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) with the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI).
