James has been a fire investigator since 2004 and has investigated fires for a variety of clients within the insurance, legal, manufacturing, transport industries; as well as companies and Government Departments. James has extensive experience investigating fires in domestic, commercial and industrial properties; lightweight and commercial vehicles; and machinery including agricultural and construction plant. James holds a Master of Science Degree with Distinction in Fire Engineering and a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours in Forensic Science with Biochemistry and is an Engineering Technician registered with the Engineering Council through the Institution of Fire Engineers and a Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

James is a Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) and a Certified Evidence Collection Technician (ECT) with the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI). James also holds the IAAI’s Motor Vehicle Fire Credential Endorsement having demonstrated that he has met the program’s requirements specifically related to the investigation of motor vehicle fires through his experience, training and education.

James joined Fire Investigations (UK) LLP (FI-UK) in 2013 where he continues to provide fire investigation services throughout the UK and Europe.

James has a professional interest in fires involving renewable energy sources as well as hybrid and electric vehicles. James worked within a research project that was led by BRE’s National Solar Centre (NSC) who were commissioned by BEIS in 2015 to investigate fires in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. As part of this project James provided expert opinion relating to the fire investigation of PV installations on domestic and commercial properties, conducted laboratory examination on damaged components and has presented lectures on this topic.

James is an experienced expert witness, having been engaged to prepare reports in accordance with both the UK Criminal and Civil Procedure Rules and has presented evidence in both County and Crown Courts. James has experience of undertaking case reviews in relation to origin and cause evidence. James was admitted as a practising Member of Academy of Experts in 2013.
